What do you think of when you think of Hungary? Goulash? The beautiful Lake Balaton? Or maybe Houdini? Yep, if you didn’t know, Houdini, the Houdini, was born in Budapest. But out of all the things that spring to mind, we bet music festivals aren't one of them.

It’s a tragedy that we don’t associate Hungary with music festivals when it arguably has some of the best. It has a diverse offering with beach raves, metal fests, electronic music bonanzas, and even one of the biggest music festivals in Europe - Sziget.

Hungary definitely deserves more recognition for the cracking festivals it puts on every year, and hopefully, this blog will help to do just that. So here are the best music festivals in Budapest and Hungary.

Sziget Festival

When: Thursday 10th - Tuesday 15th August 2023

Where: Hajógyári Island in Budapest, Hungary

2023 lineup: Billie Eilish, David Guetta, Florence + the Machine, Imagine Dragons, and many more

Sziget is the champion of Budapest music festivals, being the biggest in the capital and even one of the biggest in Europe. With a super diverse lineup, everyone stays happy, and everyone has a good few artists to look forward to. And if you need a break from the music, you can head to the beach and take a dip, sit in on some talks, and even check out the cinema! Other artists on the lineup for 2023 include Sam Fender, Mall Grab, Amyl And The Sniffers, Mimi Webb, and The Comet Is Coming.

Kolorado Festival

When: Wednesday 28th June - Saturday 1st July 2023

Where: Nagykovácsi, Hungary

2023 lineup: La Femme, Beton.Hofi, Belga, Carson Coma, Analog Balaton, Csaknekedkislany, and many more

One of Kolorado's core values is diversity. With DJs, alt-rock bands, singer-songwriters, disco singers and more, the forest festival has smashed it with its lineup. Another of the Kolorado's values is freedom. And with this, they encourage the crowds to feel free and express themselves, and the artists to experiment and be creative. It seems Kolorado has the perfect vision of what it wants to be. And judging by the success of the festival, we’d say they’ve nailed it.

Balaton Sound

When: Wednesday 28th June - Saturday 1st July 2023

Where: Lake Balaton, Zamardi in Hungary

2023 lineup: Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Hardwell, Adam Beyer, Charlotte De Witte, Carl Cox, Sam Paganini, Joseph Capriati, and more

Balaton Sound is a beach music festival that invites electronic music fans to enjoy their favourite music the way it's meant to be - at a beautiful, sunny location with sand and sea. Put together by the same team behind Sziget Festival, Balaton Sound attracts over 165,000 music fans from around the globe each year. And if you’ve got the energy after a long day dancing to your favourite tunes, there are boat parties to get the last bit of party out of your system. Looking for a massive rave? Balaton Sound might be the perfect festival for you.

This trance music festival fuses music with psychedelic themes, including trippy decor and performers in mushroom costumes. Since its inception in 1999, OZORA has grown to become the biggest and most influential psychedelic gathering, with around 30,000 people attending each year. Easily one of the best music festivals in Hungary, if you like a trippy vibe and electronic tunes, you should check this one out for sure.

When: Wednesday 23rd - Saturday 26th August

Where: Tisza River, Szeged in Hungary

2023 lineup: Timmy Trumpet, Lukas Graham, many more TBA

SZIN Festival, when it started, was a festival different from the rest. SZIN was a festival that refused to censor the artists who performed there. In that sense, SZIN started as one of the freest festivals, refusing to stifle creativity and expression. Fast forward to the present, and SZIN still prioritises freedom and still seeks to give its guests a party to remember. Many more artists are still to be announced but with electronic legend Timmy Trumpet on the decks, we're sure it'll be top.
