THE JAZZ CARNIVAL: JAZZ HEADS x MONUMENTALIST Afterparty on Saturday 25th - Sunday 26th May 2024

Following on from the first edition of THE JAZZ CARNIVAL, JAZZ HEADS is back to celebrate its 1st birthday with THE MONUMENTALIST ENSEMBLE and the legendary (Manchester) NAM SOUND SYSTEM.

As part of the AFTERPARTY, New Orleanian Cellist Gary Washington, will be premiering his MONUMENTALIST ENSEMBLE, fusing elements of Jazz, Funk and Hip-Hop for a high energy interpretation of carnival.

Andrew Ibi will be playing a selection of vinyl platters navigating the gritty and nasty terrains of Jazz, Funk, Soul, Latin, Afrobeat and other illicit and relevant tunes - no holds barred. Expect everything from Sun-Ra to Fela Kuti and Ezra Collective to Jorge Ben.

The secret SIDE STREET STUDIO party venue (not the bar space) is perfect for dancing - bring your shoes, spare t shirts and handkerchiefs!

About THE JAZZ CARNIVAL.

The Jazz Carnival is a LIVE free event at Side Street Studio from 5pm-9pm (immediately before the afterparty) featuring celebrated artists and musicians in the bar space.

Gary Washington:

Gary Washington (co-founder The Jazz Carnival), aka The Urban Cellist, is a New Orleanian cellist, composer and song writer based in Manchester, UK. A versatile artist and composer switching effortlessly between writing orchestral music and BAM (Black American Music), often referenced as Jazz.

Adé Kayode:

For the past three years, rising saxophonist David Kayode has been cultivating this project, hand-picking members to create its distinctive, groove-driven sound.  Growing up in NW London, the influence of carnival rhythms is just as prevalent as that of the west-African musicians he learned alongside. He shows shades of inspiration from bands he has played in - Osibisa, Carroll Thompson, Moses Boyd, Shabaka Hutchings. However, his music diverges, unique to his own experience, emerging proudly in energising dance-grooves and jazz that embodies the resilience of the young African diaspora living in the UK.

Ladies of Midnight Blue:

Ladies of Midnight Blue are an Afro-Latin percussion & brass duet comprised of Hannabiell Sanders and Yilis del Carmen Suriel. They create a powerful and upbeat fusion of rhythms, weaving combinations melodic percussion, brass, vocal chants, and mbira.

The Ladies of Midnight Blue have performed all over the world and in the last 12 years they have been workshop facilitators and guest artists for various projects and residencies. Their art and music workshops focus on community building and raising awareness concerning issues of inequality on all levels.
