Review of Alban Claret & Terence Collie - Jazz on the Plaza

Overall rating: 5 Verified review

Very enjoyable evening in the elegant surroundings of Cafe Yukari. Consistently brilliant guitar picking from the excellent French ex-pat supported by ever-reliable Terence on the beautiful Fazioli piano. Nice variety of material ranging from post-bop (my favourites) such as Duke Pearson's Jeannine and George Coleman's Amsterdam After Dark, through classics such as Easy To Remember, Tenor Madness, It Could Happen To You, Tangerine and the slightly controversial Wives and Lovers, to charming ballads including Beautiful Love featuring veteran Mood Indigo songstress Janet McC. What's not to like ?!

Review of Alban Claret & Terence Collie - Jazz on the Plaza

Terence Collie and Alban Claret related brilliantly musically. Alban’s bass comping on guitar freed up Terence Collie for impressive 16-note lyrical and varied rhythmic-patterned soloing lines. Alban’s guitar solos were lyrical and sensuous. Beautiful duo playing. Lovely choice of tunes. Cafe Yukari a perfect venue!

Another highly enjoyable evening at the Cafe Yukari with the Mood Indigo team. Chris Hodgkins on trumpet with some great tunes and anecdotes, accompanied by Esther on bass and Terence on piano, and an interlude from guest vocalist Kelly! Great atmosphere and brilliant jazz.

Review of Jazz on the Plaza feat. Maciek Pysz

Another enjoyable evening at the Café Yukari. Maciek Pysz on guitar with some great jazz (and a little bit of bossa nova and latin/flamenco!).
Looking forward to more excellent music from the Mood Indigo team in the New year!

Review of Jazz on the Plaza feat. Maciek Pysz

Overall rating: 5 Verified review

The perfect intimate setting for Maciek's beautiful guitar playing and no need for drums. Also unusual in that most of the two sets were either original compositions or less obvious songs by other musicians, with the only standard being Jobim's "How Insensitive". A personal favourite was his version of William Walton's "Touch Her Soft Lips and Part", previously only covered on record by Peter Erskine, although I could be wrong. Terry Collie and Stuart Barker on bass provided fine support as always.

It's a treat to hear an acoustic Jazz set. Allison's sax sound is wonderfully mellow, and she picked a lovely selection of tunes, well suited to her trio and to the intimate setting at Cafe Yukari.

An absolute no-brainer. If you haven't caught Simon live, you're missing out big time. Fabulous tenor player, world authority on the great Tubby Hayes and hilarious ultra-dry humour. Not surprisingly featured a few Tubby classics, such as Pint of Bitter, Off The Wagon and Ricardo, plus some well-chosen standards including Just In Time, On The Sunny Side Of The Street, an uptempo The Way You Look Tonight and Fran Landesmann's wonderful Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most. Terry-ific support from Mr Collie on Cafe Yukari's super Fazioli piano and the always excellent Stuart Barker on double bass.

Review of Jazz on the Plaza feat. Karen Sharp

Another very enjoyable evening. Karen Sharp on the saxophone (supported by Jakub on bass and Terry on piano) playing a selection of tunes, some upbeat and some more laid back, finishing with Darn That Dream and Tenor Madness. Many thanks as ever to Janet for arranging it all so well, and to the Café Yukari team for a friendly welcome and great food and drink!
