Review of Bar Rumba

Overall rating: 1

I wanted to start this complaint by emphasising just how baffled and shocked we are about the situation that took place on the night of the 15th of July 2022, in Bar Rumba. We have never been treated in such a derogatory and disgusting manner in any such organisation. I will continue to explain in detail regarding the night and what occurred; this was also all recorded on the CCTV camera. I would also like to state that we have been to Rumba many times.

We arrived at Bar Rumba as a group of three girls, we waited in line and provided all the documents required so we could get in. We proceeded to grab drinks and just enjoy the music. During this period of an hour and 10 minutes, as a group of three, we each had three drinks, eating before preventing intoxication to a level that is not controlled. As you can see by the number of drinks, there was no way we could have been intoxicated to a level where we became a threat or were doing things that are not appropriate for a club setting. We decided to leave to get some fresh air because we were not enjoying the genre of music that was being played. We walked for five minutes as it was incredibly hot which was exacerbated by the number of people around us.

We then proceeded to return to the club, all three of us, stood and behind one of my friends was a pole, which held the red rope. Due to the closeness to her, she tripped a little to which one of the guards, called Fatim, said she needed a breather, she was not “up to the club standards”. Confused, we agreed after explaining she was fine. As the people we are, we would have not stayed in a club if we were at a level of intoxication that was not appropriate, we would have headed home. Our priority has and always will be our friends, so if someone was not well, we would not have stayed.

We gave it five minutes and twice we were told she needed some more time. We complied, every single time they told us to give her more time. Due to the condescending and patronising nature of the way the guard spoke, Fatim and the other guards, my friend who was told that she was overly intoxicated, was emotional as she felt she had done something wrong when in reality, she tripped due to their pole. We are completely respectful that the guards are doing their job, however, that does not give them the right to treat people in a manner that is rude and degrading. You can be respectful while fulfilling your responsibilities.

We were pulled to a side by Fatim and she said to us because she has two friends that are completely sober and that she looks much better, but still not to her standard, she was happy for her to enter. We then went into the club and went to the dance floor at the front, near the DJ. During this period time, we were patrolled by two security guards, one that was tall, and bald with tan skin and a black male who was also tall and bald. While on the dance floor, we had not even been there for five minutes and we did not grab another drink, we were told to leave by the tall, bald and tanned skin man. While the other security guard said it was okay for us to stay. Due to our respect for rules and the people working there, we decided to leave and went up. My two friends left and remained at the front as she calmed the other down. I proceeded to talk to someone who supposedly was the manager.

I explained to him what happened and in the most patronising of manners, he told me several times to calm down, but the only indication of me not being calm, was my raised voice. The raised voice was a reflection of the treatment of the staff which any normal person would probably have reacted even more aggressively.

I then proceeded to find my friends in the front with another lady who also said she was the manager. She had been talking to my friends before I came and they explained the situation. I attempted to explain to her the situation, to which she kept on saying she needed to understand what happened, even though she was not listening. She then said she was going to sort out the situation and disappeared.

We then had Fatim come back to us, she reiterated that my friend was not up to standards to which we inquired about the standard, but no response was given as to what their standard stipulated. Before this, she did say she was confused about why we were back up because she had given us the go-ahead.

During a five-minute period where we were talking to Fatim, she emphasised that she doesn’t understand why this has happened. She wanted further details. As we were talking to her for a long period, Fatim moved back to sort out another customer and during this time, we gestured for her to come back. As this happened, a manager named Altin: small, bearded, light-skinned with a Gucci belt and a shirt with a map print said to Fatim, while I could hear, he said: “These girls are not worth it”. Due to the disgusting manner in which he was speaking, I asked him, are we not worth it? I repeated this twice, in a very stern, but equally respectful manner. He had known nothing of what had happened because regardless of whether or not he believed what happened, how can you know a situation without hearing all of the necessary sides involved in it?

He then continued rambling and he dismissed me with his hand and I told him, don’t you dare treat me like that. To this, he responded by ripping up paper and throwing it in my face. Due to the disgustingness of his behaviour, I came forward and said, how dare you? He leapt towards me as if he was about to physically assault me and his guards held him back as my friends held me back. Throughout this, I continued to scream, how dare you do this to me and not even my family would treat me like this?

Fatim then took us to the other side of the club, next to the smoking area. Even though we said we did not want to because we wanted to be seen on the cameras. Her demeanour had completely changed. She said that she is surprised at what has happened, she said that I dealt with the situation amazingly and that she did not have the same capacity to remain calm as I did. She hugged me and told me that she liked me and appreciates the way I dealt with the situation. She acknowledged repetitively that his behaviour was disgusting and nothing would give him the right to treat me like this. It had felt like he had spat on my face. I want to understand what had I done so wrong that it would make him rip up paper and throw it in my face. Fatim told us that she wants us to return to the club, and she would get us a table and bottle. We rejected that instantly because of the situation. She then told us to call the next day or come in the next day, but we were persistent that we wanted to speak to someone above.

After this, we requested to speak and resolve the situation with another person and Fatim, we specified that we wanted another woman. So that would be us, Fatim, Altin and another lady. Fatim did say that it’s not good for us to speak to him right now, insinuating that he was aggressive.

When he came over, it was just him and Fatim. We said we wanted to discuss the issue and said you spoke to us disrespectfully. He said he wanted nothing to do with it and left. This is bizarre because the entirety of his role is customer experience and he was the one treating the customers who had paid to get in like they were nothing and he was everything.

We then followed him to the entrance because we wanted an apology and we said we wanted a refund. Then we came to the collective decision to record what was happening because of the hostility and pure aggression he was displaying. He accused us of recording him prior which again was a false accusation. My friend had told him, we are recording you.

My friend attempted to have a civil conversation to understand the reasoning behind his treatment. He said my friend was being demanded in requesting answers for the behaviour exhibited by the team and why we were not refunded even though we had every right to do so. My friend apologised for being demanding and then asked, what is the best solution to this situation? He continued to stare at us, completely nonchalant and dismissive. He then said to her, if you want a refund come back tomorrow or do whatever.

My friend then highlighted we couldn’t return the next day when it could have been dealt with immediately because we are entitled to a refund. My friend called him sir to show respect because regardless of what happened, we did not want to stoop to his level. He then walked and started pacing around the area while being dismissive. He then came and stood in front of me, the person with who he had thrown the paper at. During this time, I was mute and just completely baffled by the situation.

As he stood in front of me, I looked him up and down, just in awe of what had happened. He then continued to be disgusting and said I was staring at his “d**k”. The absolute audacity of this grown man to be so vulgar and ill-mannered, I was just baffled throughout. I did not know how to respond and laughed at him. I said to him look at you to which he responded, look at your body, just look at you. An important aspect of this situation that needed to be emphatically expressed is that his demeanour and the way he talked to women, is as if we were the lowest level of humans on this earth. His behaviour was very sexualised by talking about his penis and my body. It felt so intrusive and felt like he was violating us.

He then shifted towards the road and I told him while shouting that his behaviour is disgusting and the loved ones that have known me for 23 years of my life, would not treat me like this. I want to highlight this was recorded by my friend. He then left again. But during this period of us waiting around, we could see him letting in white males and females. Others have complained about the racism and sexism they have faced in this place which can be found as easily as searching on Google. There was a boy called Sam who was intoxicated to the level he was touching us without permission and they still allowed him to get in several times. We realised others had also been penalised, specifically people of ethnic background.

After this, we stayed towards the front, making sure we were waiting to the side so others could enter. We requested to speak to the female manager to which they said she would come, that she was busy cleaning which is ludicrous as her role, again, is customer relations. We asked them several times and they said for about an hour and a half period that she is coming. We waited, while having a small conversation with the guards, as they were closing, Fatim said the manager would come and see us. She did not come outside as we waited another half an hour after closing.

We were so deeply affected by the situation with a man lunging at us in a hostile manner. The fact that other human beings can treat people, other humans, like this, is inexplicable. I want to highlight that we were never aggressive, we did not ruin the club, we did not hurt anyone; we were respectful even after how we were treated. You can have a look online and there ate countless photos of Altin and his vapid treatment of women and ethnic people. His picture has been posted several times with the same kind of behaviour.

As they said, we called the next day and when my friend said we had an issue yesterday, the same man, Altin cut the phone on her which has also been recorded. We continued to call from my other friend's phone, he kept on rejecting our calls and letting them go to voicemail. They told us to deal with it the next day, so they didn’t have to deal with the query.

Our request and our reason behind this complaint are to firstly, get justice for all of the others that were treated like this. We would also like a formal apology from the team and him. Moreover, we should be refunded our money because we paid for a service and the service was not provided, but degraded to such a level that we were all left in a state of awe.

Didn’t even let us into the club at the door for no reason

Review of Bar Rumba

Overall rating: 1

Never even let in. Staff was very rude at entrance and gave no valid reason for us not to be let in tonight. Never have i been met with such a lack of respect and a complete disregard of my safety as a young woman. As a 21 year old i have never been treated so poorly at a club for no good reason/ no reason given at entrance. Me and my friends were completely dumbfounded and met with rude comments by staff at the entrance. We also felt very vulnerable once barred as we were unfamiliar with the area and as the entrance was surrounded by men trying to take advantage. Would not recommend. Wish I could give 0 stars and completely non responsive via phone. Bar Rumba should do better.
