Hymn for Her / The Mountain Firework Company on Thursday 16th August 2018

For their latest release, “Hymn for Her Presents . . . Lucy and Wayne’s Smokin Flames”, the twosome kicked it into high gear.

Their wild-eyed mash-up of country, blues and punk led U.K. music critic Steve Bennett to call H4H’s sound “a riotous, rocking roadkill stew,” while others have referenced such diverse bands as Captain Beefheart, Primus, X, R.L. Burnside, JS Blues Explosion and the Ramones.

Impressively, the two create their “ripsaw sounds” (Los Angeles Times’ Randy Lewis) with only a few instruments. Wayne (with the devilish voice), mainly playing the kick-drum, high-hat, acoustic guitar and harp, serves as the group’s rhythmic driving force. Lucy (of the fallen-angel voice) delivers a gritty squall on her “Lowebow” — a custom-made cigar-box guitar: “The Riff Monster.” Catch this duo as they burn down the highway and tear up your town like a Wichita twister.

The Mountain Firework Company is taking the bluegrass sound in new directions and making it totally relevant for the 21st century, their unique brand of Americana is built on the solid foundations of American mountain music but with an addition of Celtic Folk and a dash of Bed-sit Singer-Songwriter angst.

Their trademark cocktail of dynamic drive and reflective power comes from combining traditional instrumentation (banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitars, double bass with added beef from a drum kit) with that dark thread of subject matter that runs direct from old Appalachian folk song right up to modern country noir.

The band's songwriter and guitar and banjo maestro Gareth McGahan makes no attempt to mask the Gaelic overtones in his distinctive Belfast brogue and his delivery exactly mirrors his heartfelt writing style. His songs sound both contemporary and traditional, and when they are performed with the vocal harmonies supplied by the remaining members, the band bristles with energy and vitality.
