Heritage Breaks: Freestylers/Blapps Posse (Matt/Aston DJ set) on Saturday 28th September 2019

About the Freestylers

After a 15 year career the Freestylers have covered a full 360 degrees in the Bass music genre, having played all the biggest festivals and most talked about nightclubs around the world, even the quintessentially British music show, Top of The Pops. Having achieved the kind of success most artists can only dream of, they’ve not rest on their laurels and are constantly working on new releases all the time.

Aston and Matt started making tracks together in the mid ‘90’s after discovering a mutual love of hip-hop, electro and beats. They released their first two albums ‘We Rock Hard’ and ‘Pressure Point’ on legendary Breakbeat label Freskanova. ‘Raw as F**k’ and ‘Adventures in Freestyle’ were released on ‘Against The Grain’, another Breaks power house based out of Brighton, UK. From being voted ‘Best Band’ by Musik Magazine to touring with Lenny Kravitz on his American Woman tour (he asked them himself as he was so impressed with their act), rocking a crowd of 30,000 at Glastonbury Festival ’99 and performing at MTV’s Times Sq Millenium Party, playing Big Day Out ‘05– it’s fair to say they’ve have had one big adventure so far.

The Freestylers began their career as an Urban Electronic Music Act, and their early tunes ‘B-Boy Stance,’’ ‘Ruffneck’ and ‘Warning’ set the marker. As their music progressed so did their anthems with the seminal tunes ‘Punks’, ‘Boom Blast’, ‘Fasten Your Seat-Belts,’ ‘Painkiller’ and more recently ‘Cracks.’ In addition to their status as underground heroes, they have gained commercial success with their huge global hit ‘Push Up’ and have had their music featured in TV and film, including the hugely successful comedy films Zoolander and Hey Dude Where’s My Car

They’ve released 5 Albums-We Rock Hard,Pressure Point,Raw As F**K,Adventures In Freestyle and The Coming Storm and are currently working on a 6th

Their ever-eclectic style and renegade approach to production focusing on everything in the bass music spectrum knows no bounds . Whether they’re performing as a live band, sound system or DJ set, you know they’re gonna rock hard.

About the Blapps Posse

The idea of Blapps Posse was to build a collective of musicians, singers and rappers influenced by the same kind of diverse backgrounds.

Founding members Jazzy Jay and Dazzle D made their first release ‘Rock The Discotheques’ under the guise Dynamic Guv’nors in 1988 and was released on their own label Blapps.

Aston Harvey of The Freestylers started working at Noisegate Sudios (owned by
Double Trouble) in 1989, where he met Jay & Dazzle D. After talking about making tunes; they found they had a similar taste in music so Jay and Aston collaborated to make “Just A Break Freak”.

They then went on to make the seminal tunes ‘Don’t Hold Back’ and ‘Bus’ It’ which DJ Mag coined as “a riotous, sampladelic mish-mash of hip-house and rave” a big influence in 1989/1990. Closer to hip-hop in spirit — with its scratching, mid-tempo beats and cut ‘n’ paste feel — but possessed of those classic rave signifiers, it sums up the time it was made.

Rather than being a street “crew”, they were more of a collective, featuring other artists. One of the Blapps classics “Do What You Want To” which was the first tune as a full group and featured the likes of Dazzle D, S T, Jazzy Jason and MC Untouchable.

As a birthday present in 1991 Jay’s girlfriend paid for some studio time and he came up with the track “Ladies With An Attitude” sampling ‘Madonna – Vogue’ that was signed to Big Life, home to The Orb, Yazz, Gat Décor, Coldcut and De La Soul.

Jay then went on to become Mad Doctor X and London Funk All Stars that was signed to Ninja Tune and Aston went on to become the producer behind Rebel MC/Congo Natty and one half of world renowned duo ‘The Freestylers’

The Blapps Posse back catalogue has been recently re-mastered and available digitally for the first time. To celebrate this occasion they have decided to get back in the studio after all these years and create a brand spankin’ new 3 track EP, that will have all the recognisable Blapps trademarks and elements of yester year that they have created by recovering some old tapes from their studio that had unfortunately flooded.
