Single Review: Futureheads 'Hounds of Love' (679)

This is without doubt, one the best cover versions I have ever heard. After years of being bombarded with irksome covers from pop tarts like Gareth Gates and Will Young, this version of Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love is more than a welcome relief.

This is without doubt, one the best cover versions I have ever heard. After years of being bombarded with irksome covers from pop tarts like Gareth Gates and Will Young, this version of Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love is more than a welcome relief.

It’s one of those songs that cheers you up beyond all measure; you can stick in the CD player, turn it up loud and jump around like a crazed kangaroo for the all too short three minutes it lasts. I personally haven’t performed on an air guitar for years, but this band has inspired me to hold aloft my imaginary instrument once more.

With a sound reminiscent of The Clash, or perhaps even The Smith’s had they ingested a lot of speed, The Futureheads real quality is their ability to produce an arrangement that not only does the original justice, but in fact surpasses it completely.

With the intro of Oh Oh Oh’s still reverberating around my head like a stuck record, even though I’ve been listening to it for weeks now, it’s fair to say this track is pretty unforgettable. In fact I won’t be surprised if the Sunderland quartet find themselves quite high up in the charts come next week.

5/5
