Southampton Transport Guide

Most students in Southampton tend to walk everywhere. Those who go to Southampton Solent University will be based in the heart of the city and will be in close proximity to the town centre, accommodation etc. Students at the University of Southampton can expect a 20 minute bus journey into town although the award-winning Uni-Link bus service is available to transport students to teaching sites, halls of residences, the city centre, and sports and leisure complexes.

Both universities provide car parking spaces for those who choose to drive their own vehicles, while there are also bike racks situated on the campuses for cyclists to use.

Southampton is also home of the UK’s largest cruise port. There are three cruise terminals that handle more than 450 cruise calls per annum. These are perfect for getting away with your mates for a short break to the Isle of Wight, especially if it’s in regards to Bestival!

Southampton Central is a very busy train station with services operating from South West Trains, First Great Western, Cross Country and Southern. This means that most students are able to get home easily enough on the odd weekends where they need to get back for some decent home cooking and a good night’s kip, not to mention the dirty washing that will also be in tow.

Southampton even has its own airport, which operates flights around the UK. The airport links to several airports and has especially excellent connections to London Heathrow and Gatwick, Bournemouth Airport, Manchester International Airport, Aberdeen Airport, and Newcastle International Airport.

Finally, for those who have got a bit too carried away on a night out or simply cannot be bothered to walk to one of their destinations Southampton is well served by taxi services. Some of the most popular choices among students include West Quay Cars and Radio Taxis.
