With the power of the NUS card students are entitled to discounts at many food establishments, mainly fast-food restaurants. For a quick bite in between seminars pop over to McDonald’s where students can receive a free hamburger, cheeseburger or McFlurry when a meal is bought; for a tasty treat Shakeaway offer a 10% discount; and if hunger strikes at the end of day order a pizza from Domino’s where student discount is also applied.

The University’s café’s, restaurants or Student Union’s are also options where students are guaranteed grub at affordable prices. Popular student hangouts at the University of Southampton include Food on the Go, SUSU Café (massively popular for Sunday roasts), and The Bridge. Students at Southampton Solent University have options to eat on campus, from Java City café to Delice Express, and the lively Works Food Court.

There are loads of student-friendly bars in Southampton as well that offer great menus at really affordable prices. In Ocean Village, located right near the Lucia Foster Halls of Residence, is The Court Jester. Students flock to this welcoming pub for the excellent value on their food. Monday to Friday between 12pm and 2pm, and then 5pm and 9pm the pub have a dinner for two deal at just £5.98! Then every Thursday it’s ‘Steak Night’: a 10oz rump steak with an option of chips, jacket potato or salad for just £5.99, including a free drink – bottled beer, small glass of house wine or a soft drink! You cannot get better than that!

The Bedford’s pub is another popular student venue. The burgers are humongous and are perfect for filling a hole, while the enormous fry ups are the required antidotes for curing a hangover.

Also, look out for the Chambers bar on London Road. They specialise in pizzas, which are a great choice in the lunchtime meal-deal or on Tuesday’s when the pizzas are offered at two for one.
