Biography

KYAMI is an alternative R&B/hip-hop singer-songwriter and producer based in Liverpool, U.K. born and raised in Troy, New York. KYAMI has the ability to create sweet melodies with variety in her sound, ranging from smooth lofi beats to quirky, progressive lyrics. From learning piano at the age of 6, she started writing moody ballad-inspired songs at the age of 12. The singer-songwriter started producing her own music after having negative experiences with other producers and with the idea that it would make the process of putting out music much faster, she decided to start producing her own music in 2017 at the start of attending the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts in Liverpool.

Growing up listening to her dad’s reggae and R&B cassette tapes, the artist took many of her early influences from the likes of Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse and more. In 2008 after her 13th birthday, the movie Juno came out, in which the ending credits song Anyone Else But You by Ellen Page was sung by the main characters of the movie. KYAMI often refers to this song as the first song she learned on guitar and inspired the later quirky and happy songs she wrote for her friends in middle school. The singer-songwriter started listening to a wide variety of music after discovering American indie music as a young teenager, which she says has a huge impact on her musical style. After teaching herself to play guitar at age 12, she started writing music seriously for the first time. There was always an interest in music and art as a child, so she took advantage of participating in every music or art programme there was. She started singing in her school choir in grade 3, then progressed to marching and orchestral band in 8th grade playing drum set and percussion. In her free time, the artist explored different mediums of expression; painting, drawing, sculpting and even upcycled fashion design.

KYAMI has previously worked with her brother, Kazufro, to release her first EP via Soundcloud titled Life of Ky which was released in September 2017 before her time studying at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. The EP features old school samples with a deeper look into the mind of the artist. The songs touch on KYAMI’s time working full-time as a makeup artist, when she had the budding idea of leaving her mundane life behind, move to a new country, leave her long-term boyfriend and start a real effort in creating a career in music for herself. Finding herself, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, has been a huge aspect and influence in the music she makes.

While studying at LIPA, KYAMI learned her way around different music writing softwares and since then has fully produced, mixed and mastered her first self-released single, Games (2018), available on all listening platforms worldwide.
